Relocating your profession and life can be overwhelming at times. The following list of questions is meant to alleviate some of your concerns while providing answers to essential questions about your life in Zhengzhou, China.

Please Note: This is not a contractual document. Information found on this document is subject to change. Use this guide to provide general answers to your questions regarding employment at Kinglee High School.

THE JOB

What type of school is Kinglee?

Kinglee is a boarding school for Chinese High School students who aspire to attend a University in The United States. Students are fluent in English and receive a dual curriculum in both Chinese and English. American Teachers working at Kinglee will teach an American curriculum in order to prepare students to excel while attending American Universities.

What is the educational philosophy at Kinglee?

Kinglee high school encourages a fun, energetic, inspiring and productive classroom environment. With the leadership of the principal, teachers will collaborate to create curriculum, extracurricular activities, student government, testing strategies, and college acceptance success.

What grade levels will I be teaching?

Kinglee High School is composed of English-speaking 7-12 graders.

How many preps will I have?

The number of preps you may have will be determined by student enrollment and scheduling. It is predicted that teachers will have several preps including a variety of levels in multiple subject areas (depending on content knowledge). At times, split-level classes or team teaching may be necessary.

What is the average class size at Kinglee?

Class sizes will vary for each class. Generally speaking, class sizes may be between 15-25 students depending on enrollment.

What level of English do the students speak?

Although all students are conversational, younger students (9th and 10th graders) may need modifications for reading comprehension. Regardless of content, all teachers will reinforce the use and development of English language.

What are the working hours at Kinglee?

Classes begin at 8:00 and end at 3:50. Many workdays may go beyond 4:00 due to extracurricular hours and planning/prepping. Extracurricular time (non-academic) is not included in this time. Teachers are not responsible for the supervision of children after school hours or on weekend (unless teachers are conducting an extra curricular sport or club).

What opportunities are available for extracurricular activities?

All staff members are expected to participate in extracurricular, academic, or athletic activities with the students. Activities can be formed based on your interests and the interests of the students. Many activities will take place after school or held on Saturday mornings.

What opportunities are available for professional development?

In addition to Chinese Mandarin lessons and cultural learning opportunities, a position at Kinglee High School will provide input and collaboration in professional learning communities. There will also be numerous prospects for educational leadership, curriculum development experience, and in-service presentations. Staff members will serve on PLC’s that match their expertise and interests. Teachers will also share, collaborate, and lead during staff meetings.

Do I need to arrange my own visa? Is the cost of the visa covered for teachers?

No, teachers do not have to arrange their own visas. Linda Zhang, an associate of Kinglee and her team will be fully responsible for helping the teachers get their visas. The teachers are responsible for the cost of general Z visa fees; however, Kinglee will cover the cost of mailing needed documents from China. Per Visa requirements, once employees land in China, Kinglee employees will help teachers acquire insurance, receive a physical checkup, and get a residence permit.

Who is my immediate supervisor at Kinglee High School?

You will report to Sabrina Dubik, the principal of Kinglee High School. The principal is an American teacher and administrator who will conduct teacher evaluations and provide educational leadership for all Kinglee staff members and students.

What day does the school year (with students) start and end?

The fall semester usually starts in mid- to late-August and ends in mid-February. The spring semester usually starts in late-February and ends in late-June or early July.

What Technology is available in the classroom?

Teachers will receive iPads from the school and are encouraged to bring their own laptops; each classroom has wireless Internet access available for the teachers. Students also have their own iPads and iBooks for each class.

OTHER CONDITIONS

How many hours of paid sick time are provided for teachers?

Teachers receive 7 paid days off. These days can be used for sick or personal time (based on approval) off. If more than two days are taken consecutively, a doctor’s note may be requested.

Do I get days off?

Teachers receive most weekends (some major activities or festivals may take place on a weekend) off. Teachers also receive paid vacation time. Below is an UNOFFICIAL list of POSSIBLE vacation time (official dates and lengths are determined by the Chinese Government).

Can you provide a general list of days off including summer vacation (I.e. the month and approximate number of days?

The Chinese government has final say on all official holidays, so the following is a general, unofficial list. We do not follow a typical winter/summer break schedule as other Chinese schools.

Winter break- 2 weeks (dates TBD)

Summer break- 1 month (dates TBD)

Other major holidays are:

-The Moon Festival (September 2 to 3 days)

-The Golden Week (the first week of October)

-Chinese New Year (this is during the winter break)

-Tomb Sweeping day (April 5)

-Labor Day (May 1)

-Dragon Boat Festival (June 2)

Please note: Sometimes, the government will move festivals in order to create consecutive days off for holidays. In some cases, schools will have days off of school, but there may be make-up days on a weekend.

Can you provide examples of the “cultural excursions” listed in the job description?

Once a semester, Kinglee will cover the cost for teachers to visit cultural sites, such as the Palace Museum, for sightseeing with guided tours.?

Do teachers receive an hour off for lunch, or are they responsible for the students during lunch?

Yes, it is very typical for teachers to have one-hour lunch break unless there is event scheduled during the lunch break hour from 12 to 1.? Teachers eat in the same cafeteria; however, they have no official responsibilities during this time.

Is my flight covered?

Yes, each teacher receives one paid round trip airplane ticket.

Is my insurance covered?

Yes, teachers receive heath insurance, which includes hospital visits and minor injuries.

Are language lessons included in my contract?

Yes, although Kinglee uses an American curriculum taught in English, teachers will have the opportunity to participate in free Chinese Mandarin classes.

What other cultural assistance will I have?

The staff at Kinglee will be available to help you with everything you need to acclimate to Chinese culture. Staff members will be available to:

-Translate

-Provide information about transportation

-Give guidance regarding social activities, dining options, shopping availability, and other pieces of local information

-Accompany and provide translation for staff members to top medical facilities in case of illness.

How am I paid?

You will be paid the equivalent to your USD salary in Chinese Yuan (RMB) currency. You will have a Chinese bank account and, depending on your bank, will have the ability to transfer money from the Chinese account into your personal bank account in the USA.

What is the tax % that the Chinese government takes from the total salary?

The tax % for foreigners in China varies according to how much they make. Please see in the attachment for the equation. Remember, this number will vary depending on how much RMB you are paid per month.

LIVING QUARTERS AND CULTURAL QUESTIONS

What is teacher housing like?

Teacher housing is located on Kinglee campus. Teacher rooms are located on the top and bottom floors of the Kinglee dorms. Students do NOT have access to teacher floors at any time. Teacher dorm rooms are equipped with a closet, a king bed, a desk, a television, storage space, and a private bathroom and shower. There is a shared kitchen and dining room on each floor. There are also teacher laundry facilities on the floor.

Does my room have a TV?

Yes, but there is no cable access. The televisions are equipped with HDMI and VGA connections.

Is there security on campus?

Although Zhengzhou is a very safe city, Kinglee is a gated school with 24-hour security guards to provide a safe and secure learning environment.

Is there a teacher curfew? If so, what is the curfew policy?

Because Kinglee is a boarding school, staff members must respect safety and security of the educational environment for students; therefore, a 11:00 pm curfew will be implemented Sunday-Thursday. There is no curfew for staff members on Friday or Saturday night. Please remember that although no curfew is in place, students will be on campus on Friday night; therefore, staff members must be mindful of volume level, professionalism, and discretion when returning to campus.

Can I bring my pets?

Unfortunately, this is not possible because of the living arrangements and pet policies at Kinglee. In addition to pet rules, all animals brought into the country are required to be kept in quarantine in Bejing for a month upon their arrival.

Will Internet be?available after school?for teachers in teacher housing??

Yes, there is Internet in teacher dorm rooms at all times.

What is the town of Zhengzhou like?

Zhengzhou is a large city comprised of nearly 10 million people. It is a transportation hub for other major cities in China. Although it is a large city, there are also parks and storefront shops near by.
